Monitoring Ultrasounds

Monitoring Ultrasounds

An Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to help your doctor monitor ovulation, diagnose conditions such as pelvic masses or early pregnancy and examine the thickness and texture of your uterine lining. Ultrasounds also monitor In vitro fertilization (IVF), during which women take drugs to stimulate their ovaries to produce multiple eggs. It is also used during IVF egg retrieval to help your doctor retrieve eggs.

A Transvaginal Ultrasound uses a scanning probe that is inserted directly into the vagina, a short distance from the reproductive organs. It produces clear images on the monitoring screen that can reveal even the smallest fibroids and other abnormalities. Relatively painless monitoring ultrasounds can be performed in a few minutes.

If your doctor notices abnormalities such as fibroids or unusual growths, he or she may order additional testing or recommend another procedure to address these conditions before proceeding with fertility treatment. In most cases, however, an ultrasound simply confirms that you are healthy and assures you and your doctor that your care can move forward.
